Former Invest Europe CEO Dörte Höppner appointed Riverside sustainability chief

Höppner will retain her fundraising and investor relations responsibilities – unusual for CSOs, who typically work in operational, dealmaking or portco management teams.

Dörte Höppner, former chief executive of Invest Europe, has been appointed chief sustainability officer at mid-market buyout firm The Riverside Company. She reports to Riverside’s co-chief executive officers, Stewart Kohl and Béla Szigethy.

Höppner has also been promoted to managing director for fundraising and investor relations. She previously had a “leadership role for fundraising and investor relations” and was “the primary point person for European investors” at the firm – responsibilities she will retain, according to a statement from the firm. Her LinkedIn profile describes her as chief operating officer of Riverside Europe, although this position is not listed on Riverside’s website.

Luxembourg-based Höppner’s role will include “identifying ESG initiatives and harmonising the integration of these within Riverside’s various fund families”, according to Riverside’s statement.

“Diversity and inclusion, committed environmental stewardship and high standards of corporate governance have become core issues of business concern over recent years and rightly so,” co-chief executive Steward Kohl said in Riverside’s statement. “Private equity investors expect good ESG practice of their management firms and we, in turn, expect this of our portfolio companies.”

Prior to joining Riverside in 2017, Höppner was chief executive of Invest Europe from 2014 to 2016.
