Which firms and investors have signed up to the ESG Data Convergence Project?

The CalPERS-Carlyle-led effort to standardize ESG data reporting now counts $8.7trn of managed assets represented by its participants.

More than 100 global institutional investors and private capital managers have committed to a data-sharing initiative trying to bring standardisation and transparency to ESG reporting requirements.

The ESG Data Convergence Project has more than doubled its number of participants since launching in September. Committed LPs and GPs now account for $8.7 trillion of managed assets. They include brand-name private equity firms, impact and venture capital managers, as well as institutional investors from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America.

The Carlyle Group and the California Public Employees Retirement System are co-leading the initiative to create a “long-term mechanism for improving comparative reporting”, according to a statement from Carlyle. The group is collecting data related to six ESG metrics:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Renewable energy
  • Board diversity
  • Work-related injuries
  • Net new hires
  • Employee engagement

In the coming months, the ESG Data Convergence Project will work with the Boston Consulting Group to aggregate the data into an anonymised benchmark representing metrics reported last year.
