Herbert Smith Freehills adds four regional ESG heads to meet client demand

HSF's ESG practice is led by partner Silke Goldberg, and advises on energy transition and climate change, business and human rights, environmental law, governance, greenwashing and responsible investing.

Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed four regional ESG heads as demand grows for advice on sustainability risks and regulations. Heike Schmitz, who specialises in investments, fund formation, fund structuring and regulation, has been made co-head of ESG for EMEA alongside Iria Calviño, an administrative and environmental law specialist.

Jannis Bille, a specialist in energy and infrastructure projects, M&A and climate-related disclosures, is head of ESG for the UK. Benjamin Rubinstein, who provides advice in product liability and ESG liability risks and disclosures, is head of ESG in the US.

The firm’s ESG practice is led by partner Silke Goldberg. Its advice areas include energy transition and climate change, business and human rights, environmental law, governance, greenwashing and responsible investing.

The appointments come after the departure of partner Rebecca Perlman, HSF’s former co-head of sustainable and impact investment, who joined Kirkland & Ellis’s ESG & Impact group earlier this month.

“By growing the ESG leadership team both geographically and in relation to the ESG dimensions covered by the ESG team members, the firm is taking a proactive step ahead to anticipate and meet the demands of clients,” Goldberg said in an emailed statement to New Private Markets.
