In brief: GIIN launches energy-focused impact performance benchmark

The benchmark allows impact managers to compare their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions with peers.

The Global Impact Investing Network has released a performance benchmark for impact investments in the energy sector.

This is the third impact benchmark framework GIIN has released through its IRIS+ platform; a financial inclusion benchmark was launched in March 2022, followed by an agriculture product announced earlier this year.

The benchmark was created using a “dynamic sample” of over 270 impact investments, according to a statement. The research found that the median energy sector impact investment decreases Scopes 1 and 2 carbon dioxide emissions by 6.1 percent annually.

GIIN hopes the benchmark will “drive competition that delivers greater benefits for people and the planet such as increased energy access, improved energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions”, according to CEO Amit Bouri.
