Kirkland adds another partner to ESG & impact practice

Rebecca Perlman is a prominent lawyer in the sustainable finance space and has achieved a stellar career in the industry so far – including becoming Herbert Smith Freehills' youngest ever partner.

Kirkland & Ellis has recruited Rebecca Perlman, Herbert Smith Freehills’ co-head of sustainable and impact investment and EMEA head of ESG. Perlman joins Kirkland’s ESG and Impact practice group as its 11th partner.

At HSF, Perlman advised public, private and third-sector clients on ESG risk management, mandatory and voluntary ESG monitoring and disclosures, and impact investment transactions. London-based Perlman has served at HSF for 12 years. She is currently on parental leave, NPM understands.

Kirkland’s ESG and Impact practice group has been corralling legal talent for sustainable investing from rival firms in recent years. It is headed by partner Alexandra Farmer, a 16-year veteran of the firm, who was named in affiliate publication Private Equity International’s Future 40 2023, while Jennie Morawetz serves as strategy and operations partner for the practice group.

Other partners include Mackenzie Drutowski (joined Kirkland after qualifying), Sofia Martos (joined in 2021 from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison), Daniel D’Ambrosio (joined in 2022 from DLA Piper), Paul Barker (joined in 2021 from Doughty Street Chambers), Abbey Raish (joined in 2020 from Latham & Watkins), Mary Beth Houlihan (joined in 2021 from Fried Frank), Ariel Giumarelli (joined in 2023 from Paul Hastings) and Rhys Davies (joined in 2023 from DLA Piper).

Ruth Knox, who joined Kirkland in 2021 from Linklaters, left for Paul Hastings in 2023, becoming global co-chair of its ESG and Sustainable Finance practice group. Sara Orr, who joined Kirkland in May 2021 after 16 years at Latham & Watkins, left the firm last year.

HSF’s ESG practice is headed by Silke Goldberg and includes 104 members, according to the firm’s website. Its sustainable and impact investment practice is co-headed Alex Kay.
